What's Happening in Cooper Park?

UPDATE: Currently, as of May 2019, the Mountain View Whisman School District has decided NOT to develop Cooper Park into housing. Employee housing for the school district will instead be located at 777 Middlefield.

What was the school district’s proposal in 2018 to develop cooper park?

The area we know as Cooper Park has two sections:  (1) the old Cooper School site at 333 Eunice Avenue (where Action Day/Primary Plus preschool and the sports fields are now), which is owned by Mountain View Whisman School District; and (2) the much smaller area with the playground and tennis courts on the south end bordering Chesley Avenue, which is owned by the City of Mountain View.

In January 2018, the school district announced a plan to develop the district-owned land -- comprising 9.5 acres, the vast majority of the park--  as a development with at least 118 housing units, including both single family homes and four three-story apartment buildings with a large parking lot.

This Mountain View voice article details the MVWSD Board of Trustees meeting on January 18, 2018 where the plan was discussed: School Board Favors Cooper Park Housing.

The report presented to the district detailing the plan may be downloaded here: Workforce Housing Feasibility Report.

Below is a map from the district report showing the massive area that would be consumed by the development, with single family homes on "mini lots" on three sides that would be sold on the private housing market in order to generate funds for the plan.  It also shows the three-story apartment buildings and parking lots in the middle to be used as housing for district staff and teachers.  This plan reflects the development of 36 homes and 82 apartments (118 units total), although a developer would likely push for even more units.  Eunice Avenue runs across the top of this photo:
